It has better level design, less stupid zombie moments and more of the stuff everyone liked in the first game, less easy AI and proper looking infiltration (sometimes in thief 1 you really felt like they could see you anytime but didn’t), much more challenge in the infiltration itself along with enemies that resist being knocked and such and levels that you can’t simply go through by knocking everyone out. Mind that I only had thief 1 as a kid, and wanted to play it all again (though with some HD mods, and T2 looks better after being modded, too) and even despite nostalgia, prefered thief 2. Don’t get me wrong Metal Age is a fantastic game and easily deserves to be alongside TDP, but I just don’t find it as interesting it enjoyable as the first these days. There’s less variety across the levels, the magical and otherworldly aspects are toned down too far, and personally I much preferred taking on the beasts and undead of the first from the slightly ridiculous robots introduced here.

On my last replay of the two I flew through Dark Project but stalled somewhere toward the second half of Metal Age (although arguably I may just have been Thiefed out!). Says: I thought the same. Of course the kings here are the two thief games, but Chaos Theory (and the first Splinter Cell – and even the oldgen version of Double Agent) went to some places I have not experienced again in stealth games. BTW, remembering Amon Tobin for Bricolage is a bit too old school and very unfair with his career.
